TEACHERS awaiting their leave fares, salaries and entitlements have been urged to check with their respective provincial education advisers and not with the Education Department.
Education Secretary Dr Michael Tapo said every province had a PEA and it was his or her job to make sure teachers’ entitlements were processed and paid out before August to avoid shortfalls at the end of the school year. Tapo, who was responding to complaints by teachers, told The National yesterday that his office was only responsible for teachers in the NCD who came under the national department. “My office looks after NCD teachers and I know we have done our job because we have not received any complaints from here yet. “My office is not responsible for provinces other than NCD,” he said. “Teachers’ entitlements are part of the annual budget and it is the responsibility of the provincial education adviser to conduct a provincial budget review before the end of August every year and present it to the provincial administrator when there is a shortfall. “The provincial education adviser is the chairman of the provincial education board and the budget, if contains shortfall will be directed to the Department of Treasury and Finance and not to my office. “The Department of Treasury and Finance will then sort out the shortfalls for the particular province. “If the teachers in other provinces are complaining than obviously their PEA has not done his or her job for the year by reporting to the provincial administrator.
