![]() Divine Word University’s Student Representative Council (SRC) hosted the Inter-Departmental Debate competition on Saturday 28th May. The event was held at the SVD Memorial Auditorium as Teams headed into the elimination rounds. The Debate Competition has seen students excel in teamwork, enhanced skills in public speaking and analytical research. Debating on the topic; “The PNG Government should allocate K30 million for NRL bid,” the Business Studies, team one (BS1) battled hard on the affirmative side while the Environmental Health, team two (EH2) were also strong on the opposing side. Both teams delivered exceptional arguments however the Business Studies team one came out on top.
Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT), Ms Rayanne Nongkas said the debate criterion for judging covered the following: a manner of argument delivery, persuasiveness, comprehension, facts/information, rebuttals, timing, overall stage presentation and teamwork. Ms Nongkas said organized debates were essential for students personal and professional enrichment. She emphasized that those who participated in such academic events are taking a step in gaining that experience. “Although some may not deliver as expected because of anxiety or stage fright, the courage to put themselves out there and participate is in itself, a golden moment,” said Ms Nongkas, who is also an adjudicator and mentor of the Debate program. The 2022 SRC Inter-Departmental Debate competition was launched on 14 May, registering 12 teams with the first debate session for heat one on 21 May and its second session on 22 May respectively. All 12 teams participated and six were eliminated, leaving six to head into heat two of the competition. The SRC Inter-Departmental Debate Committee in announcing the four teams for the semi-finals thanked all participating teams saying all teams were winners. The four teams in the semifinals are Business Studies team one (BS1), PNG International Relations team two, (PGIR2), Communication Arts Team one (CA1) and the Judges’ Choice, Environmental Health Sciences two (EH2). Which two teams will face off come Sunday 5 June? The best speakers from the competition will be chosen to form the DWU Debate team to compete in the Inter-Varsity debate competition later in the year.
