THE Ok Tedi Mining Limited has been praised for investing in education and making health services accessible to people living in rural areas. Divine Word University Dean for Faculty of Medicine and Health Science Professor Clement Malau thanked the mining company for funding the building of two 16-room accommodation buildings for third-year rural health science students. “Our students particularly have a unique challenge because we just started a medical programme at DWU – the second for the country,” he said. “We now have 27 rural doctors but they will be trained as professionally as they can to serve our rural communities. “Our key challenge based on the value of the university is to think of our rural people. “That is the challenge that our students here will take on.” Malau encouraged students to have an open mind while serving rural communities. “This is the first time DWU has had this experience and will be putting in place many of the things the university needs to create as part of the private-public partnership,” he said.
