![]() By Sam Koim Our education system continues to send ducks, fish and eagles to the flying school, expecting all to pass. Well, that system is fixed for only the eagles to pass, whilst the fish and ducks drop out, thinking they’ve failed in life. Life doesn’t end there. At school, we memorised most of our lecture notes to pass exam. Well, life outside of school is not organized, memorized, and applied; rather, each person has to learn it for him or herself through trial and error. In other countries and cultures, once a child reaches adulthood, he or she also develops a strong sense of independence and the will to fend for himself or herself. You go with your friends to a restaurant and there is no expectation for one person, regardless of how deep one’s pocket is, to foot the bill. That says it all. You see the Chinese in PNG? They know life in China is difficult so there is no going back. They also know they don’t have family and relatives in PNG to go and have free shelter, free food, etc. That is why they wake up early in the morning and they work long hours.
In PNG, I see many able bodied young people these days waste too much productive time doing unproductive things. Or doing nothing at all. They could spend hours, days, weeks, months and years going around just aimlessly. They tend to put on self pity faces of how the uncaring forces of the universe treated them, but fail to interpret their experiences and forge a new way out of it. Our communal culture sometimes shield us against the chaos of the universe, by consoling and reassuring us. Our culture gives us a sense of security and provision. Whilst Culture has its benefits, trusting too much in the shield of culture inevitably leads to disappointment. Not only that, our culture continuous to encourage laziness and cargo-cult mentality, whilst putting a strain on the few productive members of the community to share the fruits of their labour with the rest of the unproductive group. For some of us, life hasn’t been easy. No one served us things on a golden platter. We came the hard roads to be here. We cultivated it. When life throws a lemon at us, we go an extra mile to make a lemonade. Be intentional! Have an idea of the things you’d like to accomplish before you die and work at it. How close you get to that ideal is the measurement of how good your life was, not the ease with which you achieved it. Struggle on the way to your ideal life is to be expected; the trick is to learn to enjoy the struggle. If you have to be a cleaner, so be it. If you have to toil the land so be it. Never let your pride stand in the way. But Don’t you ever waste precious time doing nothing. Putting on a pity face expecting people to give you a free pass to prosperity will only make you continue to depend on them and remember: he who feeds you controls you. Make up your mind for 2022.
