CLASSES at the University of Goroka have been suspended for two weeks following damages to the hall of residence on Sunday 11th September which has also destroyed structures at the University in Goroka. This follows a decision handed down by the top management team in consultation with the academic senate on Monday at the University of Goroka. About 1500 students were displaced with no proper accommodation as the 7 story dormitory known as one of the iconic buildings at the University was condemned for use by authorities last Sunday. The affected students were accommodated at the lecture rooms for a night, however, the decision handed down by the management is to give the students affected ample time to recover from the trauma experiences they had to go through.
University of Goroka Vice Cancellor Dr Teng Waninga said a total of 5 students sustained minor injuries which they received treatment and among them was a pregnant female student. Dr Waninga said no major injuries or deaths were reported but students were advised to vacate the facility for the safety of students until a proper situation report is done through technical advice from 3 separate engineers that has been engaged by the management to conduct the reports. Dr Waninga assured parents that the students are safe and the management is looking at cost effective alternatives for students for the remainder of almost 6 weeks before the academic year ended.
