![]() Approximately one in seven people in the world live with a disability. In Papua New Guinea, the National Policy on Disability is seeking to remove barriers and improve access to human rights for people living with disabilities. Australia Awards is supporting these efforts with a Graduate Certificate in Disability Inclusion short course. The course provides leaders and managers in secondary schools, colleges and universities with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of disability policy settings which they can then pass on to their students. Participants will be equipped to identify and challenge barriers to inclusion and to develop appropriate approaches within the PNG context. Kiak Guande is a clinical supervisor guiding students during their clinical practicals at the Lutheran School of Nursing in Madang Province. She says the course will enable her to pass on knowledge to her students to approach patients in a holistic manner.
“People can have a physical or psychological disability and when they are admitted, the nurses will have a better idea of how to help so when they approach the patients, they will be able to help them towards a speedy recovery,” she said. Australia Awards have supported a range of priority sectors in PNG with more than 756 short course scholarships awarded to individuals showing potential and initiative as part of the #PNGAusPartnership since 2014.
