AUSTRALIA will assist Enga in health and education and empowering its women in the rural communities.
Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was in Enga at the weekend, touring hospitals and seeing the El Nino effects. She also addressed schools, nursing college and institute of business studies. Ms Bishop announced that Australia has allocated K4 million to Enga School of Nursing for more dormitories and dining hall. Australia will also build 10 new classrooms, 10 new teachers’ houses and ablution blocks in the province for schools to use to educate the people. She also announced that there will be 10 more Australia Awards scholarships for Enga women, specifically teachers in elementary schools. And out of the 22 scholarships for diploma of nursing, 16 of them are from Enga Province. Bishop met with women leaders of Wapenamanda to discuss how they can be empowered and to listen to their grievances. Women leaders told of their daily struggles, about feeling inferior among their male colleagues, the illiterate lot, being an easy target on sorcery, the hardship of doing business and health issues. Ms Bishop said Australia now stands ready to assist as always, specifically in the drought affected areas of Enga Province. Post Courier
