Alotau District at the weekend launched it’s annual tertiary students scholarship scheme, the first of K100,000 was fed into the program for this year. He admits it's a little late, but is hopeful the district's scholarship committee can work to assist students that have been identified to receive this help this year. The District has been providing K250,000 annually for school fee help to students since 2011, they claim over 800 students from the district have benefited from this program and gone on to find employment. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Treasury who is Alotau MP- Charles Abel was in town at the weekend to launch his annual district scholarship program for tertiary students in his electorate. “We have invested through our DSIP Program K250,000 every year since 2011. That's about K2,000 per student, works out to about 125 students per year. That's some 800plus students that have benefited thus far". He delivered the first of K100,000 to this program for the year at the launch, admitting a little late but hopeful the district’s scholarship committee can work on helping tertiary students they have selected to support this year. Provincial Education Advisor Roma TUIDAM present at the event, while praising the foresight of leaders to assist cash strap parents with school fees, urged they find a more workable solution to avoid double dipping from all the various district scholarship programs so a lot more students benefit. Abel supported the call, throwing the challenge back to the education division, who no doubt have representatives on the committees of each provincial and district scholarship programs to work collaboratively to address this issue. The Provincial Government meantime, through Governor Sir John Luke Crittin has also announced the continuation of their K1million tertiary students support scheme for 2018. NBC News
