The Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology Department clarified that Grade Point Average (GPA) holds weight, but it's not the sole factor for tertiary institution admissions. Department Secretary Fr Jan Czuba highlighted that each university or tertiary institution establishes its own set of criteria for admissions.
Fr Jan Czuba, the acting secretary, cited an example from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), emphasizing that even with all As, a student selecting UPNG as their second choice might not secure acceptance. This clarification comes in response to concerns voiced by parents and Grade 12 students who, despite scoring well, faced rejection from their preferred institutions. Fr Jan Czuba outlined the significance of subject combinations, indicating that differences between the subjects taken in secondary school and the institution's requirements could impact a student's admission. "Students might have an excellent GPA, but if the subject combination doesn't match the institution's criteria, they might not get into their desired program," stated Czuba, emphasizing the autonomy of institutions in their selection process. He stressed the inability to interfere with the standards and criteria set by these institutions. Fr Jan Czuba also highlighted the 2023 academic year as having the "lowest standard" and mentioned the presence of available slots in the National Admission Pool due to this low academic level. He indicated that institutions still had openings for students and awaited their selection. The department's stance sheds light on the multifaceted criteria influencing university admissions, emphasizing the significance of subject combinations alongside GPA.
