Government must look at teachers’ salaries, leave fares and welfare before quality education can be achieved, a forum has been told.
Teachers voiced their concern during a highlands regional forum, organised by a parliamentary referral committee on education, in Mt Hagen, on Monday. The committee is looking into issues affecting teachers, including leave fares and entitlements. The forum was led by parliamentary committee chairman, Robert Ganim with committee members, Goilala MP Daniel Monai and Jimi MP Mai Dop. Western Highlands provincial education superintendent operations, William Aua said teachers were the key people to drive the country forward and problems affecting them should be fixed quickly and effectively. “When it comes to teachers’ leave fares, welfare and salaries, we face problems in Waigani (the education ministry headquarters),” he said. “This is why many teachers are seen in Port Moresby trying to sort out their salary matters with the headquarters,” he said. Aua said Western Highlands received K1.3 million annually for leave fares. “That amount is for the previous data. But what about now when the number of schools are increasing and more teachers are added,” he said. “With what is being given, we will only work with the K1.3 million to meet the teachers leave fares.” Aua said about 35 teachers in Western Highlands were yet to be included on the payroll. Wabag MP Gamin promised the teachers that their concerns would be raised in Parliament. Comments are closed.
