In the hallowed halls of Divine Word University, amidst the aura of accomplishment and dreams fulfilled, Cliff Kiru stood tall, a testament to the power of resilience and determination. At the age of forty-nine, he defied all odds to achieve what once seemed impossible – a doctorate in philosophy. Born in Poroma, Southern Highlands, Kiru's journey was marked by challenges from the very beginning. A Grade 10 dropout in 1990, his path seemed uncertain, overshadowed by the weight of missed opportunities. Yet, he refused to let circumstances dictate his destiny. Amidst financial struggles, familial responsibilities, and the relentless trials brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kiru pressed on. The sacrifice of leaving his beloved wife and four children behind for nearly six years was a testament to his unwavering commitment to education and self-improvement. "After dropping out, I spent seven years in the village, navigating through life's uncertainties," Kiru reminisced. But fate had other plans for him. An opportunity emerged, leading him to the doors of the Christian Leaders Training College (CLTC), igniting a spark of hope within him once more.
With steadfast determination, Kiru embarked on a journey of academic pursuit. He earned his bachelor's degree in theology from CLTC between 1998 and 2002, followed by a postgraduate diploma in education from the University of Goroka in 2005. Undeterred by challenges, he pursued further studies, obtaining his master's degree in theology from CLTC in 2015. However, Kiru's thirst for knowledge and understanding was far from quenched. In July 2018, he embarked on his most ambitious endeavor yet – a PhD at Divine Word University. Driven by a desire to unravel the complex social and political dynamics of Southern Highlands, he delved deep into his research, seeking to unearth the underlying causes of unrest and tension. As he stood on the precipice of achievement, Kiru reflected on his remarkable journey with a sense of pride and gratitude. "To go from being a dropout to holding a PhD is truly a remarkable feeling," he remarked, his voice filled with emotion. "I am proud of how far I have come." In his moment of triumph, Kiru acknowledged the invaluable support and guidance he received along the way. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his mentors, Prof Iwona Kolodziejczyk and Prof Pr Philip Gibbs, as well as the entire CLTC community, for believing in him and fostering his academic growth. As Cliff Kiru embarks on this new chapter of his life, his story serves as a beacon of inspiration to all who dare to dream. It is a testament to the transformative power of education, perseverance, and the unwavering belief in one's ability to overcome adversity. In the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, Kiru proved that with grit and determination, anything is possible. His journey is not just one of academic achievement but a testament to the indomitable human spirit. Also read Comments are closed.
