A SCHOOL initially established in Port Moresby to help the underprivileged students attain a certain level of education has now been recognised for its services with a change of school name to Waigani Christian College.
The school was established in 1993 by the school’s director and proprietor, Benjamin Mul and was formerly known as Waigani Christian School. The school now has expanded, providing education for kindergarten, elementary to primary and high school and offers the approved curriculum by the Education Department. The school is a permitted private school and is located at Waigani. The school aims to impart to children Christian principles which will be instilled in them and help them in life. July 22 will be a special date for the school as it was on this day last month, when a joint visit by the National Capital District secondary and high schools senior standards officer, Boi Degemba and coordinator Firmin Rawala announced to them the name change. School principal Tony Mong said: “This has paved the way for benefits like recognition of our contribution to basic education in PNG and qualify for government support including eligibility for our students to sit for the national examinations and considered for selections by the department for higher education.” When speaking of the school’s recent development, Mong said last year the school launched the new “standards-based education pilot concept”. He said the government made the commitment to establish the high school which took in the first batch of Grade 9 students at the start of the school, this year. “The Waigani Christian College, High School is now piloting the government’s standards-based education projects,” he said. The school is located in Waigani Heights and takes in Grades 5-9. It is well ventilated, furnished and equipped with white boards and essential classroom necessities. The school’s total student population is more than 1000, with 21 qualified and registered teachers teaching kindergarten to Grade 8, while 24 teachers are engaged at the high school level.
