A local leader from Central is appealing to Sogeri National High School to give priority to Koiari students by offering them spaces.
Bagua Watti made the appeal saying local students need to be considered for places despite their low academic marks. This is because of a decline in intakes of Koiari students into Sogeri National High school. “Most of our local students have only reached the maximum Grade 10 in education and the trend is disappointing,” Watti said. Watti, who is a member of Sogeri’s governing council and board chairman of Iarowari Secondary School blamed the students for not taking their education seriously, thus resulting in their poor academic performances. “Their academic performance is not on par with that of students from other provinces who attend Iarowari Secondary and Sogeri National High respectively,” Watti said. “Currently the number of local students attending Iarowari is at 4 per cent and those that attend Sogeri is probably at 0.01 per cent.” He said local students found it harder to excel in their subjects because they were too comfortable with life since they have access to government services in Port Moresby and that they were being paid royalties by the Government for the use of their land. Watti said another contributing factor was drugs and alcohol consumption by local students. He said the small number of educated Koiaris currently in the workforce were those from Mountain Koiari who strived to succeed at school to find employment due to the fact that government services hardly reached their villages. “Students from Sogeri Koiari are too stubborn to learn,” Watti said. Watti said he has spoken to parents many times on the importance of educating their children so they could make it into Sogeri National High and compete with outside students. Meanwhile, the governing council endorsed Watti’s proposal, given that local students scored high marks while also taking into account the provision of land by locals to which the school (Sogeri National High) is stablished.
