MARIANVILLE Secondary School in the National Capital District laid claim to the Institute of Business Studies school debate competition National Title.
Marianville, an only girl’s school, challenged Notre Dame Secondary School from Western Highlands for the title in Kavieng on Nov 13. IBS executive director Edward Silva commended the four Marianville speakers and said the debate competition was a tool IBS has developed to provide trainings for Papua New Guineans. “IBS has been in operation for the last 26 years and we are always trying to be creative and innovative in our commitment to provide education and training for our people.” He said the debate was developed to unlock potentials in all aspects of human development, including academic, leadership and integral human development. “Through the competition, we are developing the students to do more research, which helps them to understand and learn,” Silva said. “It also gives them the confidence in public speaking and gives them the challenge for reasoning, time management, interpersonal skills and many more. “It’s really a tool that will develop someone from nobody to become somebody and we will make improvements in the program next year” he said. A speaker from team MarianvilleDianne Lomutopa thanked IBS for the initiative as it was helpful. “I’ve learned so much and it improves me both academically and improved my leadership and interpersonal communication skills. Participating in the competition makes me feel totally different,” she said. “It improves my ability to research, doing studies and bestowed confidence in myself to become somebody which I dreamed for.”
