A LOCAL level government president in East Sepik has called on the Education Department to screen all early childhood schools to ensure that they are registered with their teachers on the government payroll system.
Wewak Rural LLG president Francis Hevu said early childhood schools were growing like wildfire throughout the Wewak district but most of them were not officially recognised by the Government. He said as a result, teachers from these schools ended up at his office asking for the LLG to pay them when the LLG was not liable to pay teachers who were under the Education Department. Hevu was speaking at the presentation of K10,000 from his LLGSIP to Passam Central Elementary School last Friday. The money will assist the school improve its infrastructure and ease congestion in classrooms. The school has six classrooms with 40 students per class and urgently requires one more classroom. Hevu thanked the parents for their support to the school over the years, adding that the government was ready to help schools that helped themselves first. He said early childhood and elementary schools set the pathway for their children’s learning and it was important that they were set up with approval from the Education Department so that paid positions for teachers were also created. “The early childhood teachers are coming to my office when they should be going to the education office to enquire on their pays. The LLG does not have a budget for teachers’ salaries,” Hevu said. “Even the LLG officers are not paid by the LLG. They are paid by the Government with their salaries deposited straight into their accounts,” Hevu said.
