Huon Gulf, a district in Morobe Province, has reinitiated its tertiary scholarship scheme after a hiatus of seven years. The program was officially launched on Friday under the leadership of the local Member of Parliament, Jason Peter. According to District Education Manager Sam Geseng, the scholarship scheme, previously halted in 2016, has been reinstated to support students pursuing tertiary education. Approximately 450 scholarship application forms have been made available, with each of the local level governments – Wampar urban and rural, Morobe, and Salamaua – allotted 100 forms. An additional 50 forms are reserved for special cases. Geseng explained that the application process closely mirrors the Gerson Solulu Scholarship (GSS) Scheme, emphasizing transparency and efficiency. The scholarship program falls under the jurisdiction of the district education office, with a budget of K400,000 allocated for the current year.
"We will sponsor them equally if they meet the requirements set," Geseng stated. "Applicants will receive 25 percent of the sponsorship based on the resources available." Yowa Imaita, a third-year student studying human resources at the University of Papua New Guinea, expressed gratitude on behalf of students for the district's commitment to supporting human resource development. Imaita highlighted the financial challenges faced by many students and appreciated the initiative taken by the local MP and his administration. District Administrator Andrew Namuesh assured that there would be no duplication with the GSS, urging thorough scrutiny before accepting applicants. Committees have been established to screen applications, with a commitment to fairness and adherence to the guidelines outlined in the application process. Prospective scholarship recipients must provide essential documents, including an acceptance letter for the current year, transcripts for years 2, 3, or 4, a fully completed application form, proof of enrollment in a government-recognized institution, Grade 10 and 12 certificates, matriculation/upgrade results, GPA of 2.4 and above, National Identification (NID), police clearance, and a medical report. The application period commenced last Friday and is set to close this Friday, February 9th. Also read Comments are closed.
