GEREHU Secondary School in Port Moresby is one of the largest schools and has adopted an Expansion Plan which has already commenced.
Principal Martin Kenehe said Gerehu Secondary has been a school of choice since 2014. “The district education board in January 2014 endorsed our submission which the Teaching Service Commission approved,” Kenehe said. “Our submission has gone through legitimate due process therefore we should be officially recognised, hence allocation for each student enrolled in 2014 is eligible to receive the Government’s free school fee paid this year.” In responding to the district education board’s recommendation for schools to create additional classes to cater for the increase in student numbers and adequate access to education in the city, the school has additional five more classes again this year resulting in the school accommodating 300 extra students. School figures show that 2,360 students are currently enrolled. “Following this trend of development, Gerehu Secondary has been innovative and creative to meeting the increase in demand for space in Grades 9-12 respectively as the standard of education in NCD has attracted quite a number of students from other regions,” Kenehe said. Kenehe said that due to the free education system, many parents were transferring their children from private institutions to government schools which were not planned for by the Education Department. This has placed more strains on city schools’ classroom facilities. “Because the Tuition Fee Free Policy does not cater for this year’s extra classes, parents securing spaces for their children inevitably are charged fees for this year, unlike their continuing and selected counterparts,” Kenehe said.
