TWO former University of PNG third-year law students, found guilty of manslaughter of a fellow student in 2012, have been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment.
National Court Judge George Manuhu handed down the penalty on Friday to Tande Joseph, from Eastern Highlands, and Peter Martin, from Chimbu, over the death of Obadaiah Igish, a third-year anthropology student. The incident happened on Oct 9 at UPNG bus stop after they and the Igish drank and a fight took place. That led to the Igish’s death. “They engaged in the fight because of alcohol and they provoked each other. They were stupid to fight each other,” Manuhu said. “The death was a waste of human resource, time and money spent by the deceased’s parents and relatives. “The jailing of the prisoners is a waste of time and money spent by their family and relatives.” Manuhu said they were no weapons used in the fight and that they were young offenders. The court reduced the sentence from seven years to six years, seven months and three weeks after taking into consideration the four months and a week the accused were in custody. “In sentencing, the court takes into account that crimes of manslaughter and violence are prevalent in the county,” Manuhu said. “This poses a big challenge to the country and courts to discourage such acts. That is why the court is imposing tougher penalties. “Life is precious and only God and take away lives.”
