THE Department of Youth, Religion and Community Development is working with the Department of Personnel Management towards introducing graduate programmes for Child Protection Officers in universities.
In an interview with The National, Secretary Anna Solomon said there was a shortage of welfare officers (now known as child protection officers) in the country and the initiative was to address that under the new restructure of the department. “That’s what we’ll be discussing with DPM to have a graduate programme. One of our biggest challenges is the lack of training for professional counsellors,” she said. “Most of them come with social work background but the training at that time did not look at many of the issues that are surfacing today. She said they needed to be given some training to carry out counselling properly so graduates could look into training and counselling in that area. “We are trying to embrace our PNG ways where families have been our social safety net. We are trying to embrace the ‘PNG way’ where when a child is left as an orphan, we don’t look for an orphanage or another family. Another family member, a brother or sister, automatically takes care of the child. “That’s what we are encouraging through the Lukautim Pikinini Act. The first and foremost is to leave the child in his or her family circle. “As much as possible, that will be done after an investigation. You cannot take them away from their family, that goes outside of our PNG ways.

A great idea that need immediate attention! How can Christian Leaders' Training College (CLTC - a fully accredited national Education Institution with DoHERST) help in partnership with Department of Youth, Religion and Community Development and the Department of Personnel Management (DPM) to achieve this goal? Persons concerned from these two Departments are welcome to contact the Dean of Undergraduate Studies (mbakura@cltc.ac.pg) or the Principal Rev. Dr. William Longgar (wlonggar@cltc.ac.pg) for further discussion.
