VOICE Inc is taking on the challenge of instilling leadership qualities, beginning with university students.
It opened its Leadership Centre at the University of Papua New Guinea last Thursday to inspire young people to begin the process of learning, researching and speaking about development challenges and issues surrounding leadership.
Voice Inc executive director, Serina Sumanop thanked their funding partners and the UPNG for recognising the role of the organisation in building leadership qualities.
She said the centre was a space that was resourced with books, journals, magazines, computers and internet access so that young leaders can build their knowledge on leadership challenges and development issues nationally and global.
She said the organisation had expanded its programme to UPNG, PNG University of Technology and soon to the University of Goroka.
Second Secretary at the High Commission of Canada in Canberra, Stephen Burridge, who was at the opening and was the major funding partner of the centre, said it was through the commitment and enthusiasm of the organisation in building quality leadership confidence that had driven them to fund the programme.
“Our support is like a standalone programme that aims to build capacity in local organisations because we recognise that sometimes you really need to get down to the grass roots (locals) with organisations to be able to build capacity that would be sustained over a longer period of time.
Burridge said the idea of beginning at the university level was a great initiative by the organisation as they are the leaders of tomorrow.
