VOCATIONAL education is important for development, hence the need for its establishment in all districts, says Acting Education Secretary Uke Kombra. Dr Kombra said this during the opening of 10 new and refurbished buildings at Goroka Technical College on Wednesday. "Technical colleges and vocational institutions provide the basic skills training and those who are educated through these institutions contribute enormously to the development and growth of this country," he said. Dr Kombra said Papua New Guineans have been overlooking vocational and technical institutions for a long time because they have always been interested in becoming lawyers, accountants and doctors. "We have always overlooked the work of carpenters, mechanics, plumbers and many more who contribute positively and enormously towards the development of the country," Dr Kombra said. "That is why the National Government, through the Department of Education has prioritised vocational and technical training education so Papua New Guineans can acquire quality skills." Dr Kombra acknowledged the management of Goroka Technical College for constructing the new building which will assist the students in their learning. He said PNG has a total of 120 established vocational institutions with only three districts yet to establish. Dr Kombra added that the Vision 2050 Development Plans outlines that every district will have a vocational institution, 10s technical colleges and four polytech colleges.
