The Usino-Bundi District Development Authority (DDA) has begun the nationwide distribution of its K1.5 million Tuition Assistance Scheme, with more than K157,000 presented to tertiary students studying in Lae last week. The initiative is expected to benefit 309 tertiary students from the district who are enrolled at higher education institutions throughout the country. The rollout commenced in the Eastern Highlands Province before moving into Morobe Province. Usino-Bundi MP and DDA Chairman Vincent Kumura officially presented K157,549.60 to five tertiary institutions in Lae to assist 45 students with their tuition fees.
Funding allocations included K36,208 for seven students attending the International Training Institute (ITI), K27,000 for seven students enrolled at Datec Learning Centres, K23,918 for six students at the National Polytechnic Institute of PNG, and K18,423 for eight students studying at Balob Teachers College. The largest allocation of K52,000.60 was directed to 17 students attending PNG University of Technology. Speaking during the presentation, Mr Kumura encouraged students to remain focused on their education and use the opportunity wisely. “This program is aimed at helping you continue your studies and easing the financial pressure faced by your parents,” he said. Mr Kumura said investing in education was both a responsibility and a long-term strategy for community development, adding that district support programs were essential in helping the National Government achieve its education goals. “The Government’s vision is for every citizen to have access to education, and practical programs like this are helping make that vision a reality,” he said. The DDA team has since left Morobe Province and is continuing its nationwide verification and tuition payment exercise for Usino-Bundi students studying in other provinces. Headlines
