MORE women should be encouraged to take up engineering, mathematics and science, an official from the United States Embassy says.
“Usually women are steered away from science and leave men to do it. When they should be encouraged to rise above challenges and make a contribution to the community,” coordinator for community liaison, Yvette Terrell Perica told The National. She made the comments after the US Embassy sponsored 38 students, mostly girls, from the Lasallian Technical College to watch a movie – ‘Hidden Figures’ at the Paradise Cinema last week. The movie was about three African-American women who studied science and mathematics in the 1950’s, and went on to developing a program at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) that sent men into space. “They were able to accomplish this at a time where there was extreme racism and segregation in America, where black people had no access to education” Terrell- Perica said. “I hope from this movie the girls can learn that education is important and success does not come easy. And they should never stop pursuing their dreams. They should find a mentor in the field they choose to study and pursue their dreams.” “This is the first time we are doing this and it may seem expensive to bring the girls to the cinema but we hope that they can take something from this experience.” The national

My Daughter Shiebelle Tumun, who was featured on The National News Paper page13 on the 5th of December for topping St Patricks College, was also going to do the NASA programme at the Queensland of University of Technology this year. However she decided to do medicine at James Cook University this year because of hearing such rumours..To date we are struggling to find sponsorship for her to register at the university this year.If there is anyway the government of US or any helping agency could get in touch with us to help this young talent from Minj.Jiwaka Province to pursue her interest. She desperately needs registration for this year.
