INDUSTRIAL action is looming for the University of Papua New Guinea as the National Academic Staff Association pursues its demands including a 7.5 per cent wage increase. The proposed action also comes at an unprecedented time when students had only just resumed classes following their controversial boycott. NASA is also dissatisfied with the response by Vice-Chancellor Albert Mellam whom they labeled as "unreasonable." Their demands include 100 per cent guarantee of their safety on campus; breach of annual staff leave of six weeks; risks and burn out allowances. Association president Emmanuel Gabu Gorea said yesterday that staff had given the university administration all of last week to respond to their grievances. However, they felt the timeframe for the response will need to be extended. They have now given another time frame for the administration and the Minister for Department of Higher Education Francis Marus to respond. Their letter to the minister was delivered yesterday. While this is the second week of classes at the university, the staff feel that their demands have not been met and will pursue it to the next level if there is negative response. Mr Gabu said in the lead up to the resumption of classes last week, the staff have approached the issue in a collative manner. Mr Gorea said the letter sent to the Minister yesterday was focused more on the outstanding 7.5 per cent pay rise in salaries for staff.
