THE University of Technology students’ representative council has been suspended for the rest of the 2016 academic. Unitech deputy vice-chancellor Ora Renagi has confirmed the suspension, saying that the decision was reached by the Unitech council. Dr Renagi said the SRC was in control of recent boycott of classes and unrest which are now over and the students were gradually returning to classes. He said that an independent internal investigation team was in place and investigating the boycott dynamics and would be making recommendations to the university to action. "The SRC has been suspended. The SRC constitution will be reviewed and may re-convene next year subject to approval of council," Dr Renagi said. He said the council’s decision to withdraw its recognition of the SRC is on the basis that the SRC leadership was unable to contain its activities within the bounds of its constitution when the boycott degenerated into a conflict between two groups of students which ended in a death and arson attack. Dr Renagi said and in the absence of an SRC now, there should be no legal implications because the decision of the council is legal. He said the focus of resuming the year this semester is for students to return from home and complete their cademic year. "Individual concerns or grievances can be addressed through the students’ services and facilities centre or the departments," he said. He commended the successful reconciliation program between the Southern Highlanders and the Engan students at the Okari campus in Lae last week. He said that the event was followed by a peace ceremony on Unitech campus where the two groups of students said sorry to the rest of the students and the staff.
