University of Technology students who are stranded in Mount Hagen want better engineers to design and construct PNG’s main roads.
The students claim that Chinese engineering companies are not doing a good job on the Okuk highway resulting in many sections of the highway been washed away by heavy rains or buried by landslides. Like many of their fellow students, the five students are looking for ways and means to get safely from Hagen to Goroka, exchange buses then journey to Lae to resume their studies. However, there are a lot of obstacles facing them caused by natural disasters and their own countrymen. Roads are flooded after heavy rains, bridges and culverts are washed away and locals along the way are less than helpful, demanding exorbitant fees for helping travelers cross from one side to the other.
