THE University of Papua New Guinea is keeping its doors open to students to resume classes this week but will have to make a decision on the continuation of the semester on Friday. Acting Chancellor of UPNG Dr Nicholas Mann told The National yesterday that the campus was quiet “and we still have doors open waiting on students to come and resume class”. “Many students are coming in to the campus,” Mann said. “And we will continue to open doors this week and encourage all students to come back and resume classes. “The campus is quiet and there is no harassment, intimidation or security issues on campus. So we encourage all students to come back and return to class. “This week (June 20 to 25), the university will continue to keep the doors open and if the students are not coming in this week, then the (university) senate will have to meet and advise the (university) council as to what is the next course of action. “If the students continue to stay away from class, then that would mean this week is the sixth week of boycott (of classes). “And six weeks of boycotting will have a serious effect on the academic credibility on the courses being studied at UPNG.” Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari is expected to meet the heads of the four State universities today to discuss the boycott of classes by students. Mann told The National yesterday that Lupari would be meeting the chancellors and vice-chancellors of UPNG, University of Technology, University of Goroka and University of Natural Resources and Environment.
