THE University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) will introduce a two-year degree program next year in public sector accounting.
About 30 officers of the Finance Department, specifically from the provincial and district treasuries division, will be participating in this new program. An agreement was signed yesterday between the university and Finance Department to improve the public service management of finance by creating a program that develops professionals in the field of public sector accounting, auditing, business management, commerce and public policy. Acting Finance secretary Ken Ngangan thanked UPNG and in particular the School of Business Administration for embracing the partnership with the department, to train and prepare officers of the public service with the skills and knowledge for effective and efficient public management. Mr Ngangan said the Finance Department and public service have a wealth of experience and knowledge in areas of public finance management but over the years, this had been lacking. He said the establishment of this degree program would lift the performances of workers in terms of how they managed public funds. Finance Minister James Marape, who witnessed the signing said it marked a significant milestone for UPNG School of Business Administration and the Finance Department. He also acknowledged the tremendous need for a program that focuses on investing and improving public service performance. The signing also saw the presentation of a K300,000 cheque by Mr Ngangan to the Institute of Public Administration to prepare the dormitories and classrooms that would cater for the 30 participants who would be enrolling in the program. The degree program will be taught by lecturers from UPNG School of Business Management.
