THE University of Papua New Guinea academic council has approved for the commencement of the Comprehensive Hazards and Risks Management (CHaRM) diploma programme.
Head of Environmental Science and Geography (ESG) course coordinator, Professor Chalapan Kaluwin said council gave the approval in 2015 where 83 students graduated last week with certificate of CHaRM through the ESC discipline and the School of Natural and Physical Sciences. He said more students have signed up to learn about management and designing policy development in mitigating dangers, threats and risks in the country and the Pacific. Kaluwin said 197 students have received their certificates in recognition of attendance to this concentrated programme. The ultimate drive of the programme is to decrease, adapt and change or cope dangers, disasters and emergencies by applying the knowledge to accomplish the assigned responsibilities in disaster risk management. This training through UPNG in partnership with the PNG National Disaster Centre has allowed the Papua New Guinea Government to enhance human and capacity building throughout the country and support the provincial government to manage all forms of disasters at home. National Disaster Centre director Martin Mose said the course covers threats such as droughts, landslides and impacts of climate change, civil unrest and many others that we can prepare to avoid. “The course allows for experts from various disaster related fields to integrate with students for more practical hands on approach,” Mose said.
