No one is a failure and we all deserve to have a second chance in life. UPNG Morobe Uni Centre administration officer Jacqueline Manau echoed this sentiment when asked why the centre was established. The centre was started in 2003 at the Martin Luther Seminary in Lae and later moved to Top Town. “We accept Grade 10’s and 12’s who do not have a chance to make it through the normal system as it is a bottleneck system that accepts only the students who get really high marks,” she said. The Uni Centre is a bridging program that students use to get them into Universities and other tertiary institutions even if they have not been accepted in the first place. “It is a type of Matriculation Education that students pursue. The Certificate in Tertiary and Community studies (CTCS) is a course with 11 subjects and is a bridging course Grade 10 and 12 students take up to qualify them to get accepted into tertiary institutions,” she said. It is recommended students take two subjects per semester so it usually takes four years for a student to complete a course, depending on their dedication to their schooling. Ms Manau said students who are accepted in the first place have their name in the system so if they wanted to leave and go to work and come back again to school; they were accepted on the spot. She said the centre accepts students from remote Morobe areas like Watut, Menyamya and other outcentres of Morobe. “It does not mean that students who attend this institutions are failures; in most cases, the normal system cannot accommodate them as there is no space for everyone,” she said. The Uni Centre is currently accepting students for the resumption of Semester One for this year. There has been an increase in the acceptance of CTCS students for semester one compared to last year’s semester one intake as more students are aware of the opportunity the institution presents.
