PAPUA New Guinea needs engineers that are problem solvers and should be sourced from the University of Technology.
This is the challenge from the newly-appointed chairman of the Unitech industrial advisory board for engineering and science programmes and engineering manager of ExxonMobil PNG, Jeff Ralston. Ralston is a qualified chemical engineer and has over 34 years of experience in the mining and petroleum industry worldwide. He said for this to happen, Unitech must follow the path which was initiated and strictly adhere to the advice and recommendations of the board to complete accreditation process. “Accreditation is a rigorous, specific, testable and sustainable process that covers all aspects of education: the students, curriculum, faculty, staff and facilities for all departments,” Ralston said. He said the role of the board would be to give counsel and advice to Unitech as it goes through the process of accreditation; to encourage the faculty and staff; and to serve as advocates on behalf of the university within the companies and communities and advocate with the government as necessary to ensure proper support for this endeavour. Speaking at the first meeting of the board on Monday, Ralston said he was honoured to serve as chairman as the board would assist the university in its drive to receive accreditation.
