AN independent United Nations scientist is conducting tests on the river sources in the Highlands provinces to determine the cause of death of marine lives, says National Disaster Centre director Martin Mose.
“The scientist will do test samplings of the rivers to determine if the death of fish in the Western and Gulf river systems is caused by the earthquakes in Southern Highlands, Hela, Enga and Western Highlands,” Mose said. “There are also dead fish reported in rivers in those Highlands provinces.” Mose said they usually got reports of dead marine lives in the river systems in Western before an earthquake. He however warned people not to eat the dead fish from the rivers. Mose said a UN disaster and coordination team was always sent areas affected by natural disasters around the world. “And they are now working with us to make assessment of the earthquake. The UNDAC team left for Mt Hagen on Saturday to conduct assessment in the earthquake affected areas. But the scientist went to Nomad in Western to collect reports of dead prawns and fish from the communities there. “And from there, the scientists went to Nogoli in Hela.” Daru police station commander Inspector Soiwa Ricker said there were reports of dead crocodiles, prawns, fish and other marine life in the Strickland and Fly Rivers.
