Two students are dead and more of their schoolmates are clinging for life after a horrible road accident in Toma, East New Britain last Friday. The students are from Malabunga high school. They were returning home to Viviran village when the accident happened in wet rainy conditions. Survivors said the PMV truck experienced mechanical problems before it ran off the road and crashed. The incident occurred last Friday, at Bitakapuk village near Wairiki and towards Viviran village in the Toma Vundadidir Local Level Government area. The PMV truck had picked up the students from the Toma area from Malabunga secondary school and were travelling home in the afternoon. It is deemed to be one the worst accidents to happen in recent times in the province, involving mostly females. The truck encountered mechanical problem resulting in the driver not being able to control the truck which ran off the road down the slope, and overturned. One of the female students died at the scene, while another died at Vunapope hospital later. Member for Gazelle and Minister for Police Jelta Wong was on the scene minutes after the accident and assisted the injured onto trucks and directing them to the various hospitals. Mr Wong described the scene as one of the worst with students lying everywhere and still in shock, while some were crying for their friends. He said he made sure those that were not seriously injured were admitted to Paparatava health centre while those in critical condition were admitted at Vunapope and Nonga hospitals. He said there were about 18 to 20 students with the adult male driver. The driver escaped soon after the accident. Mr Wong spoke to one of the parents who was an old schoolmate to assist the grieving families with food stuff. He said the driver escaped but his identity is known to the villagers who promised to bring him in to the authorities. Those admitted are in critical condition fighting for their lives. Attempts to get more information from the police were unsuccessful. Post Courier
