Travel agents are committing an offence if they charge unnecessary fees on teachers leave fares being deducted along with unnecessary fees charged is an offense committed by the, Education Secretary Michael Tapo said yesterday.
He said this when responding to various complaints raised by teachers from the Kairuku-Hiri district, Central Province, about not receiving their full recreational leave fares for last year. Mr Tapo clarified that the only authorised travel agent was Air Niugini which teachers had failed to engage with when conferring their travel arrangements causing deductions in their leave fares for 2014. "Recreational leave is an entitlement of any registered teacher they get every two years; it is one of the conditions of employment. So this means they are not entitled for their full fares to be deducted. "So for the agent to deduct the fares is totally wrong under any law under the sun. For the company to hold the teachers’ entitlement fares and deduct is wrong," he said. Mr Tapo also said the travel agents or companies were not supposed to get commissions out of the teachers’ fares. Tapo said teachers who chose to confer their travel arrangements with other travel agents other than Air Niugini were also wrong as Air Niugini does not tax teacher leave fares. There had been concerns regarding teacher leave fares with many teachers still complaining about their entitlements being deducted and not properly explained until school resumption early this year.
