MORE than 200 inspectors from the education department are attending a week-long conference in Port Moresby to rate the teachers’ performance and qualification.
Education Secretary Dr Uke Komba said it would determine the future of the country’s 5421 teachers. “This conference will also look at 178 teachers who have not been performing to expected standards. If they do not pass, that will be the end of their life as a teacher. “Teachers’ qualification, their performance and the overall rating process is very important.” He said inspectors visited schools to inspect teachers, vet their qualification to ensure that they completed grade 10 and 12 and had graduated from a recognised teaching institution. “This is a process that you have started few years ago because we have received results of some teachers who have not actually come through the right process,” he said. “There are some teachers’ colleges that have not been approved by the National Education Board. “There is one in Western Highlands, there is another one in Jiwaka, National Capital District and Eastern Highlands. Teachers performance in a classroom is rated by an Inspector alone. Teacher recruitment/employment and is the prerogative of Teacher Education Division and PNG Teachings Service Commission. Unless each responsible authority does its duty, education delivery is into chaos. You will never, never mend it.
