THE Morobe education division started arranging leave fares for teachers yesterday from an K8 million budget.
However, there were mixed reactions from rural teachers. Teachers started queuing up early in the morning at the education office to be issued confirmation letters which will be presented to service providers to facilitate their travel. Provincial Education Keith Jiram said they were not paying teachers half or less than what they had applied for. “We are not giving teachers 50 per cent or below what they have applied for. We are giving them 100 per cent of the amount they’ve applied for, despite cash-flow problems faced in the country,” he said. Jiram said they were acknowledging and appreciating teachers’ efforts. He said the payout would continue today and tomorrow, and by Thursday, teachers should start travelling home. Jiram said payments were from the government’s education budget. He said there would be another K8 million budgeted for teachers leave fares for next year. Jiram said those with queries had lodged formal complaints that would be looked into next year. However, the issuing and payout process have caused mixed reactions from teachers, with most from rural areas having to queue up for hours and spending extra to overnight and see service providers the next day. Some teachers claimed that their desired mode of transportation that they had indicated in their leave fare application was not honoured. Highlands’ region women teachers said they initially indicated to go by air to their provinces but fares were calculated to travel by road. “The road condition is bad, armed holdups and sometimes unnecessary roadblocks along Highlands Highway are risky to travel with our children,” one teacher, who did not want to be named, said.
