MORE than 500 teachers in the rural parts of Madang district have been instructed to resume duty today.
Madang education director Moses Sariki said he issued instructions for the teachers at various schools in South Ambenob and Transgogol to begin teaching today. About 27 schools in Madang district rural remained closed following the beheading of a teacher in the area a few weeks ago. Bau Primary School teacher Sam Gawi, from Southern Highlands, was killed on April 2 in his home inside the school compound in Ward 20 Ambenob LLG area and that scared teachers at South Ambenob and Transgogol. Sariki said only Bau Primary and Bau Vocational School will remain closed until further notice. He said teachers were instructed to shut down operations for and indefinite period when Gawi was attacked. A teacher from Barum Primary School who did not want to be named said teachers feared for their families. Sariki said convincing teachers to return to their respective schools to teach would be a difficult task. “I expect all teachers to be in class today except for Bau Primary and Bau Vocational School,” he said. Meanwhile community leaders in the Ambenob and Transgogol LLGs urged the government to consider setting up a police mobile squad in Madang.
