AN elementary school teacher from Kimbe, identified as Ken Liti, drowned when the motorised canoe he was travelling in capsized in rough seas over the weekend in Siassi, Morobe Province.
The West New Britain Provincial Disaster Response Centre said the motorised canoe was traveling between Siassi main island and Lablab government station when it capsized with 20 to 30 passengers on board. Chairman of the response centre and provincial administrator Williamson Hosea said Mr Liti had travelled to Siassi with the body of a colleague, Ruth Yalom, and was returning from the burial when he met his fate. Mr Hosea said the other passengers sustained injuries and had to be treated at the Lablab health centre. He said Provincial Disaster Response Centre upon hearing of the incident dispatched a helicopter which airlifted the body of Liti who is now at the Kimbe General Hospital morgue. The other passengers were picked up by a ship on its way back from Madang. Meanwhile, Mr Hosea is appealing to villagers from the coastal areas and the islands to take heed of weather warnings issued by the Disaster Response Centre. He said they should not travel out in the current bad weather with the province now going into the second week of continuous rain. PNG Education news/ Post Courier Comments are closed.
