A primary school in teacher in Lae is in police custody, over allegations he fraudulently took part in producing and distributing examination papers, as well as aiding students cheat the examinations.
Morobe Provincial Program Advisor for Education, Keith Jiram, confirmed the arrest of the teacher, and for his part in helping the students cheat. There is a growing concern by Grade 8 students, their parents and other stakeholders, after reports that examination papers were illegally obtained and circulated among students in the country. The Provincial Education Board is not taking these reports lightly, and says it will deal with offenders criminally, through the police. Provincial Program Advisor for Education, Keith Jiram confirmed that apart from the arrest of the teacher, 12 students from a un-named primary school have also been identified after they were caught with downloaded fake examination answer sheets. They will also be referred to police. "The particular teacher, who perhaps also did a number of cheating in the province over the years will be dealt with by the police under criminal offence. "To deter this kind of practice, we are not going to take it lightly." As a measure, all teachers and schools administrators in Morobe have been asked not to allow grade 8 students to enter examination venues with mobile phones, bags or any other items apart from the required items like pens and rulers. The Grade 10 and 12 examinations in the province, were however conducted smoothly with no reported incidents. Meanwhile, a secondary school teacher from Gerehu Secondary Schools in NCD has been arrested for distributing Grade 10 and 12 exam papers prior to exams. He is out on K1000 bail.
