THE Government may re-look at agreements of private organisations that require recipients to return after studies to work for a period of time, a cabinet minister says.
Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology minister Malakai Tabar said the ministry would like to make sure such binding agreements increases the number of scholarships offered by private organisations for students to study at higher learning institutions. “I believe that is also the responsibility for this Government and this department to ask for some amendment in the legislative arrangements for the students that have been sponsored by private organisations. “There used to be bond arrangements for scholarships. “In other words, if you have a scholarship from an organisation especially from a private organisation, they see it as an investment from them. “And that is that responsibility from you as a graduating student to effectively give four or five years of your working life back to the organisation for the investment that they did for you. “We basically would like to re-visit that and we would like to make sure that whenever there is an investment from a private organisation, the student that has been sponsored by the private organisation must have a bond to go back and work for that organisation for a period of time after graduating. “This is an important part so that we can increase the number of participating organisations in this country who will come forward effectively and invest in the development of our young people but more specially the need to increase the number of spaces and scholarships in our institutions.”
