SUMKAR MP Chris Nangoi says the district lacks funds to help students with their school fees.
Nangoi said many people were requesting school fee assistance before schools opened next week. He said the district might be able to assist them later when funding was available. He added that the government would continue to allow free education for students. Meanwhile, issues with space in schools in the province would continue this year. Pastor Joseph Itaki, who is running the Flexible Open Distant Education (Fode) centre at Walium, in Usino-Bundi, said students not listed for grades 9 and 11 this year should apply to his office at Gospel Finance. Itaki said Fode provided the opportunity for a second chance at education for students who missed out on grades 9 and 11. Madang education director Moses Sariki said students who do Fode would study the same subjects as those in schools, sit the same exams in grades 10 and 12 and be entitled to enter a university if they passed. “The only difference is that Fode students get their books at the Fode centre and study at home,” he said.
