Officials from the Department of Higher Education gave students from Kupiano Secondary School in the Central Province an insight into an online application system for grade 12 school leavers during a visit last Friday. Executive manager for tertiary admission and scholarships Timon Bune and officials explained to the students that each grade 12 student will receive letters explaining the online application system. The officials gave the students a chance to query the new system.
The online system was opened on August 1 and now gives students the opportunity to apply for tertiary institutions online. They are given five options to apply online unlike in the past application where three choices were made on the School Leaver Form (SLF). Students have been encouraged that to do internet research and all to have access to Facebook accounts and to use them constantly. To not able to apply online is now not an excuse for them. The officials also showed the students the school’s grade 12 performances over the past three years. In 2015, out of 90 grade 12 students that sat for the national examinations, only nine were selected to higher learning institutions. In 2016, 81 students sat for the grade 12 examinations and nine were selected and 72 missed out. Last year, 84 out of 104 students were selected. According to Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, the use of a customised electronic selection program that was introduced to the institutions by the DHERST last year, showed improvements in Kupiano Secondary School in 2017. This has given the department confidence to state that the introduction to online application should see improved results.
