A MAN is facing fraud-related charges involving K2.7 million of public funds allocated for rehabilitation work at a school in Eastern Highlands.
John Mauwe, from Wasi village, Kundiawa, in Chimbu, faces 19 counts of misappropriation. He appeared before Deputy Chief Justice Gibbs Salika at the Waigani National Court House on Monday. The court was told that in 2009 the National Planning Department awarded a K4 million contract to Mauwe’s company, Mauwe Investment Ltd. The contract was awarded under the rehabilitation of education sector infrastructure funds for rehabilitation works at the Aiyura National High School in Kainantu. State prosecutions said between Nov 26, 2009 and Jan 12, 2010, Mauwe made out 19 cheques to individuals and companies. They said the cheques were not related to the rehabilitation work at the school. It is alleged that proper tendering processes were not followed when the contract was awarded to Mauwe. And the work done at Aiyura National High School was of a poor standard with cheap materials being used, it was alleged. It was said that work carried out to the school was worth under K600,000. Mawe pleaded not guilty to the charges. The State is expected to call eight witnesses to give evidence before Salika. The National Comments are closed.
