Papua New Guinea Southern Highlands Governor William Powi has reaffirmed his government’s backing for higher education, announcing a K1 million funding boost to Western Pacific University during its second graduation ceremony in Ialibu. The event brought together former Prime Minister and Ialibu-Pangia MP Peter O’Neill, provincial officials, families and graduates under the theme “Shaping Digital Futures: A Decade of Transformation,” marking another milestone for the young institution. Governor Powi told the gathering it was a privilege to witness the university’s steady progress, recalling its inaugural graduation last year as a historic moment for both the province and the country. “It is both an honor and a privilege to stand before you today,” he said. “Last year, I was here for the first inaugural Western Pacific University graduation. We witnessed the historic graduation of this institution, marking a significant milestone in the development of higher education in our province and in our country.” He commended the university’s leadership for steering the institution through its early challenges, saying establishing a university required strong commitment and resilience. “It is not easy to establish, manage, and sustain a university, especially in the formative years. Through resilience, determination, and very strong commitment, you have continued to drive this institution forward. The second graduation is clear evidence of stability, maturity, and persistence in leadership.” Governor Powi also recognised Mr O’Neill’s role in establishing the university through an Act of Parliament in 2014, noting its growth from just 49 students in 2021 to more than 300 students today. Programs now offered include higher education certificates, foundation studies, information technology courses and international business, with new partnerships delivering specialised training in gaming, aviation and online learning. “These are not just programs,” he said. “They are the pathways to building a digitally and globally competitive workforce.” He acknowledged ongoing issues affecting the campus, including accommodation, utilities and student welfare, but assured continued government support. “As a government, we take note of those challenges and will continue to work with the university to ensure that Western Pacific University develops into a safe, nurturing, and fully functional institution of excellence.” A total of 92 students graduated during the ceremony, with Governor Powi urging them to uphold the institution’s reputation. “You have remained focused despite challenges, and today you stand as graduates ready to contribute to our province and to our country. Conduct yourselves with dignity as you go out.” headline
