SENIOR officers from the Department of Education have completed a course under the education planning for safety, resilience and social cohesion, according to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) division of the Education Department.
“The distance education course was organised by the Unesco International Institute for Education Planning (IIEP),” deputy secretary for TVET and Unesco Godfrey Yerua said in a statement. “The modules include the introduction to education sector planning for safety, resilience and social cohesion, analysis, policies and programming, cost and financing and monitoring and evaluation. “This distance course aims to strengthen the capacity of education sectors to plan for and prevent the impact of crisis. “By taking participants through a systematic examination of the ways in which education authorities can integrate safety, resilience and social cohesion in national planning processes.” Yerua said graduates could now put into practice what they had learnt to support risk reduction interventions that cover predictable, recurrent emergencies as well as sudden-onset disasters or conflicts in the education planning sector as disasters and conflicts can have a devastating impact on the economic and social development. He commended the officers for completing the online distance education programme on time while still performing their daily tasks as public servants. The course participants included first assistant secretary for Unesco and executive director of PNG National Commission for Unesco Andrew Angobe, assistant secretary for TVET curriculum Rossa Apelis, acting national librarian Mary Warus, senior planning and strategic officer Peter Lagia and research officer Richard Potihin.
