SECONDARY schools in Ialibu and Pangia, in Southern Highlands, have received K2 million each for infrastructure development.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, pictured, the Ialibu-Pangia MP, presented the cheque for Pangia Secondary School during its graduation ceremony last Friday. The cheque for Ialibu Secondary School was presented later that day. The K2 million was part of a commitment of K5 million each for the two secondary schools. The balance of K3 million will be paid to the schools next year. O’Neill said the funding was from the Infrastructure Development Grants provided by Southern Highlands and Hela. Pangia Secondary School principal Alex Nakanol said Jerry Kiwai Contractors had been engaged to begin work on school projects. “I assure you (O’Neill) that these funds will be put to good use for the development of new teachers’ houses, classrooms and dining facilities,” Kiwai said. O’Neill witnessed the graduation of 470 students from Pangia Secondary – 150 Grade 12 students and 320 in Grade 10. O’Neill said he was pleased to see an increase in the number of students graduating from the district. He said the event reminded him of his own graduation some 30 years ago, when he completed Grade Six at the Pangia Community School. He promised to give all Grade 12 students of Ialibu and Pangia a laptop each. In addition, he said “all students in primary and secondary schools in my electorate will receive school uniforms in 2014”. “We will engage professionals to train all Year 12 students to become computer literate so that they are better prepared when seeking employment or further education,” O’Neill said.
