A GROUP of primary school teachers in Port Moresby and a Catholic Church parish are taking a new approach to address school fights.
They are uniting primary schools in their respective Ward 8 zone to promote peace at the primary school level. The four primary schools located in the Tokarara area involved are St. John Catholic Primary, Ororo Primary, Tokarara Primary and June Valley Primary. St John’s Catholic Parish priest Fr Dong Saladaga said the initiative started three years ago and was held annually during a selected month where guest speakers are invited to come speak to the students on Christian values, social problems and teenage issues. It is organised by the Tokarara St. John the Apostle Parish through its parish pastoral team of animation. This year’s theme is ‘Live pure’. “The purpose of this programme is the result of our common reflections on how to find solutions to the ongoing school fights. Eventually the programme is making a lot of difference in the students’ lives,” Saladaga said. June Valley Primary School teacher Kila Babaga said since the programme started commented, there have been no reports of fights or rivalry between the four schools. “The students have fostered friendships and many seem to develop a more mature and positive outlook on life and I would very much encourage other schools to initiate such similar programmes instilling Christian values,” Babaga said. Linda Tule, leader of the PPTA, said the idea originated after a school fight in 2012 between Ororo and St. John students, where many were hurt during the confrontation. “Such programmes give students a sense of purpose and hope, and encourages them to refrain from getting into bad behaviour and focus on education.”
