A PRINCIPAL who allegedly assaulted a student in a remote school in West Sepik is recovering after he was attacked with bush knives, says provincial police commander Moses Ibsagi. Ibsagi said yesterday that the teacher was rushed to Aitape District Hospital for treatment. “The headmaster of the Buang Primary School in Lumi was slashed in both legs by about 20 men after he had disciplined the student for allegedly breaking school rules,” Ibsagi said. “The teacher’s relatives from Boni village have now blocked off the junction of Aitape and Lumi roads and the Yangoru section of the Sepik Highway to prevent villagers from Buang travelling to and from Aitape and Wewak.
“They are also demanding a compensation payment of K43,000 from the Buang villagers.” Ibsagi said auxiliary police officers from Nuku and Lumi were monitoring the situation. “I will deploy additional regular police officers from Vanimo when funding is made available,” he said. It was reported that the prisoners had fled in Papua New Guinea. “When we get the details from our Indonesian counterparts, then we will track them down and detain those escapees who were serving various terms for smuggling drugs into Jayapura City,” Ibsagi said. “There were 26 PNG prisoners in Doyo of which 15 had escaped.” Doyo prison officers told The National that four PNG citizens had been recaptured by Indonesian police while the rest fled into PNG.
