THE Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) schools in the New Guinea Islands Region (NGI) recently completed a week-long e-learning programme for their school system at Kambubu Secondary School, in East New Britain.
All the principals of primary and secondary schools, including Sonoma College, attended. About 21 participants from East New Britain, West New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville attended. Think Tank Quiz (TTQ) host John Kama, who was the facilitator of the training, said that was the last leg of e-learning and online examination workshop for the SDA school system in the country. The first training started at Mt Diamond Secondary School in 2012 where the country’s first e-learning and online examination facility was set up as a pilot project. Then it moved to Kabiufa and Paglum Secondary schools in the highlands and finally ending the three years span of training at Kambubu Secondary School in ENB. The objective of the e-learning programme in the Adventist school system is to equip its staff and students with the latest trend in education where integration of ICT in teaching and learning is crucial in the modern day classroom. The e-learning facility will enable students to intentionally access information all over the world to enhance learning while the online examination facility will assist teachers to set electronic examinations where marking is done automatically. One of the advantages is that it is paperless, which reduces cost, as well as prevents cheating and subjective marking of papers. SDA education director Joe Ponduk said: “We value the students in our education system that we want to give them a world-class training by integrating ICT in their learning.” The 21 participants remarked that it was an eye opener to have such a training.
