A STUDENT is dead and two others are missing after a rugby match turned violent
in Kerowagi on Saturday. The deceased, a Grade 11 student of Kerowagi Secondary School, was found dead near Koronigle Bridge. It is believed that he was struck on the head with a stone. Earlier, his school and the Kondiu Secondary School had competed in a schoolboys rugby league match. Shortly after the game ended, a fight broke out between the students. A Kondiu student said he and his schoolmates managed to flee from the Kerowagi school compound through a small gate. However, some ran towards an unused airstrip towards Gena and others along the main road towards Koronigle. He claimed that the dead student was among the group which ran towards Koronigle. During a roll check on Monday, the two students were missing, he said. Chimbu police commander Supt Michael Wellsh confirmed yesterday that after the game, one group incited the other and a fight broke out. He said some criminals also joined the melee and chased the Kondiu students. A handful of policemen were present but were outnumbered. Wellsh said his men tried to bring the situation under control but were overwhelmed. On Saturday evening when police went to Kondiu to check if the students had returned safely, they were attacked. Two policemen sustained minor injuries while the police vehicle was badly damaged. Wellsh said the incident was being investigated and some arrests would be made soon. The Kondiu school principal who accompanied the student’s body to Goroka could not be reached for comment Comments are closed.
